2017... Out with the old, in with the new...you

January 1st…..  That one time of the year where everyone gets rejuvenated and motivated to look for a fresh start. Here are a few things meant to align your mindset, whether you are a business professional or an individual ready to get your “resolutions” in place for the new year.
  1. Evaluate what worked in 2016
The importance of self-reflection cannot be stressed enough. Everyone has their highs and lows, some things you tried worked, some things didn’t. And before you stay on the same track, in 2017, you will do well to take a minute and remember what worked, and maybe find some new things you want to try.  Then make that part of your “how I continue to improve” plan of attack.
  1. Make your goals for 2017
Some people call them resolutions.  I prefer the term Goals.  Everyone laughs at resolutionists.  If you are a member of a gym, you know that in January your machines that were once open, now have a waiting line of 5 people or groups deep.  Don’t get me wrong, you HAVE to start somewhere, and I 100% support people trying new things and setting new goals.  But by March, you usually no longer have to wait for the machine to open up.  Your goals should involve both short and long term. (Don’t give up by March if you set a completion date of June).  I learned about goal setting when I was a sophomore in high school.  The most important item when setting the goals that I learned?  Write them down!!!!!  My wrestling coach made me write my goals down, and then we would read and visualize them together every day.  Set monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual goals.  Outline your metrics (aka, define your progress) of acceptable progress, and track them.  Goals should always follow the SMART principle: simple, measurable, assignable, realistic, and traceable.  Then define your “how do I get there” list of actionable items. Here’s another thing I learned from my wrestling coach about goals:  We talk about making them realistic.  I set my goals.  He rewrote them and set them higher than I did.  I thought “You are crazy coach”.  But as the season progressed, I’ll be damned if I didn’t start reaching his higher standard than I’d set for myself.  Make them realistic, but tough!  Challenge yourself!  You would be surprised how much you can do.
  1. Review how you can improve your digital presence
In this age of the internet, companies should be constantly striving to remain relevant.  What was cool last year will more than likely become irrelevant next year.  If you don’t believe me, ask your kids.  That’s what I do.  I remember back in the day of MYSPACE, and how cool that was.  Is it still relevant?  Companies that neglect their social media pages, or make their content as dry and un-engaging as possible will yield little success in those fields. Make sure that you update the information on your websites that might confuse potential customers in the new year. Yes, I’m an accountant, and yes, I know taxes are dry, but dammit, I try!!!
  1. Change up your workspace
Taking the time to reorganize your office can be a great way to motivate yourself or reinvigorate your attitude. Cleaning out any clutter can bring a surge to your creativity and your mood.  Trust me, I just did this over the weekend, and it almost feels like I just started working in a new office.   It’s refreshing.
  1. Make a point to reward success
Everyone likes to feel appreciated, especially you. This year, you may want to resolve to express your appreciation to everyone who contributes in your office. Cultivate a work culture of recognition for good work and giving praise. Reward yourself for personal victories and accomplishments at work or at home. Be sure to celebrate your wins as much as you learn from your losses.  Is it your goal to save $1,000?  Once you get there, reward yourself with a dinner, a movie, or some quiet time you’ve deserved.

6.     Determine how you want to grow personally this year
The company’s success is important, but you must not understate the impact of taking care of YOU contributes to your work ethic. Define your personal goals….  Weightloss, drop a clothing size, saving money, running a marathon, read more, etc…..  Set aside quiet time for reflection, and determine how you can get to where you want to be.  Be sure to write it down and review it daily.  Post it on your cork board, your mirror, in your wallet.  Wherever you will see it to make it part of your routine.

I am proud to say that to date I have stuck to my resolutions this year and my Portishead accountants office is flourishing!
